Understanding Viscosity Classification Systems

Viscosity is the single most critical physical property of an industrial lubricant. Choosing the correct grade prevents boundary wear, micropitting, and hydrodynamic drag.

ISO 3448 (Industrial VG)

The international standard for industrial liquid lubricants. The ISO VG number represents the midpoint kinematic viscosity in centistokes (cSt or mm²/s) at a standardized reference temperature of 40 °C with an allowable tolerance of ±10%.

AGMA Lubricant Numbers

Defined by the American Gear Manufacturers Association for enclosed industrial gear drives. Standard numbers range from AGMA 1 (ISO 46 equivalent) to AGMA 8A (ISO 1000 equivalent) for high shock-load open and closed gear trains.

SAE J-300 & SAE J-306

Society of Automotive Engineers ratings. SAE J-300 governs crankcase/engine lubricants (with 'W' denoting low-temperature winter pumping limits). SAE J-306 governs axle and manual transmission gear oils (e.g. 75W-90, 85W-140).
